Acai Berry Virus Message in Yahoo Messenger

I did not suspect it was a virus when I first received this kind of message last week. I just wondered why the person who sent the message suddenly kept sending this message about Acai Berry. I know Acai Berry was a fruit claimed to benefit those who want to lose weight since I always kept getting spam emails that had Acai Berry in the subject.

The first thing that came into my mind was maybe this person who sent the message is into affiliate marketing and she is trying to promote this website. I was just lucky coz I did not click on the link. Early this morning, as I signed in my yahoo messenger, I got the same message and it was in the same pattern. The first thing that the person sending the message will do is buzz you then give you a message:

I have been taking Acai Berry now for two months and already lost 34 pounds, it is the same stuff that was on the Oprah show, Mark and Kat lost so much weight too with no diet or excersise. Get it now, its only five bucks a bottle, we are living proof that it works like magic. Get it over at URL here (I eliminated the url coz you guys might also get the virus if you click on it.)

I replied to the person who sent this message and ask her if it's a virus, unfortunately she has not replied to my message... but I have a very strong feeling this is a virus. So for all of you who use yahoo messenger.. be cautious and do not just click and click on any link even if it is your friend who sent that message.

i got a friend who have this, from the 1st time i received it i knew it was not from him writing those. just don't click the link and update all your security softwares.

FYI: "error in the script on this page" usually means that the insider news popup is not working. This can be disabled in the preferences (under the "General" Tab).

If it was from your friend, then sounds like the spammer somehow got hold of your friends password.

Many people use their yahoo id and password combination at other less secure sites around the web. If those sites are compromised, since they don't follow security best practices, then your yahoo account is at risk.

I suggest changing your yahoo password, and refrain from keeping same username/password between important sites and your mail/banking sites.

The one thing that I noticed is that I only get the message when I am online. I have never encountered receiving offline messages of this type. Hmmm.. sounds weird.

Unlike the previous virus that also caught several of my friends in yahoo messenger where I would receive their supposed Mass messages even while I'm offline. With this acai berry virus, you get the message when you are online.

This isn't just limited to yahoo messenger. I just received one from a person on my MSN list. (I'm logged in with pidgin on a linux system and it asked me first if I accepted an SSL certificate.)

I also received this kind of messages. And it alarmed me when my brother sent me an email that he receive that same message from me. I am using pidgin on windows XP system. You cannot do the "buzz" feature on pidgin, but on the screen shot my bro sent me, I made a buzz then the message. Also on the time stamp, I am currently offline that time.

Also, just a few days ago, while at work (I am not using YM at work but I can chat to YM), I saw that my YM ID was online, but before I left home, I signed off and shutdown my PC.. and there is no one at home. I sent a message that time, but there was no response. And when I came home, I opened pidgin, and there were no messages sent (supposedly I'll get a message if someone sent me a message while I am online).

My friend also tells me she kept receiving the message from me (around 12 in the midnight).

This might be a malware that gets your password so it can be used. Or someone is really hacking Yahoo accounts.

I changed my password and monitoring if someone will complain.
