Halloween and Trick or Treat

Growing up in the Philippines, Halloween was never something we would look forward to year after year. Not until recently, with the establishment of the big malls in the city, wearing costumes for Halloween became a big deal. This is the first time I will be seeing kids doing trick or treat around the neighborhood.

Pumpkins also seem to be a big deal here. So we went to a pumpkin farm, picked some pumpkins and carved it. Yes! This is my first time to carve a pumpkin. Of course, you can now find pumpkins in the Philippines, but it would be crazy to carve them for Halloween, considering how expensive they are.

The schools here also have an early dismissal for Halloween night. This way, kids have enough time to prepare for trick or treat. They also have the Halloween parade inside the school where all the kids will be wearing their costumes while parading around school and their parents watching them.

Some houses in the neighborhood also really take time to decorate their houses and dress it up like haunted houses. There is one area near our place where you will really have fun just seeing the fully decorated spooky looking houses. For me, Halloween is just a big commercial event. The malls, stores, candy manufacturers, costume makers, to the pumpkin growers - they all make a lot of profit from all the commercialism surrounding this event. Well it is fun seeing those kids and the kids are heart wearing their costumes.
